Participating Bishops to the Second Vatican Council

The gallery below shows the passport issued to the Cuban Bishop Carlos Riu Angles. It is an extremely rare item and is an example of the passports issued to all bishops participating in the 2nd Vatican Council so that they would have easy access to travel to and from the Council and around Italy at the same time. It is in a small leather booklet and displays the coat of arms of Pope John XXIII. This is the only passport issued for participants of the II Vatican Council.

The Papal States

The Papal States issued passports during the time they were recognized as a nation. They consisted of large papers folded in four. This passport was issued during Gregory XVI’s pontificate to the nephew of his successor, Blessed Pius IX. Also to see in the gallery…
