A Unique East German Passport – Stamp Hungary 1994

East German (GDR) passports are an interesting collection field, especially for me as German. Latest models are still frequently available after 25 years of unification. But THIS one showed here is special if not unique. The document was issued on 5 March 1990 in Berlin and was valid till 5 March 2000. Germany’s unification was on 3 October 1990 and the construct German Democratic Republic (GDR) was history.

But the unification contract defined that valid GDR passports remain valid till 31 Dec 1995 as it was assumed to much efforts to issue new passports. So someone could still travel with his GDR passport even the state didn’t any longer exists. This might have been a confusion at some borders. However it was possible. I reported earlier about such a passport with an Israeli visa issued in 1993 but now I found one with plenty of visas 1993 and 1994. The last visa entry was from 18 Nov 1994 for Hungary.

In meantime I got also one of the latest issued East German passports ever, which is dated 26th July 1990. So far I never saw a later date that this.
