The U.S. consulate in Danzig was established in December 1921, after the Free City of Danzig was created under the Treaty of Versailles (1920). Though technically independent, Danzig was under League of Nations protection and closely tied to Poland.
The consulate’s main duties were commercial and protective. It looked after American shipping interests in the Baltic, handled trade issues related to Poland’s access to the sea, and assisted U.S. citizens in the region—mostly sailors, businessmen, and a few expatriates.
Washington never recognized Danzig as a sovereign state, so the consulate reported both on local developments and on how German and Polish interests competed for influence there. During the 1930s, reports from Danzig described the city’s steady Nazification – party militias, censorship, and growing hostility toward Poles and Jews.
After Germany annexed Danzig in September 1939, the consulate continued briefly under severe restrictions. By August 1940, the State Department ordered it closed, and remaining staff were transferred or repatriated.
Under Article 105 of the Treaty of Versailles, German nationals who were ordinarily resident in the territory lost their German citizenship and became nationals of the Free City of Danzig. The Free City issued its citizens passports that confirmed their nationality and allowed international travel.
