In 1896, Friedrich Trump filed a U.S. passport application that marked a significant moment in his journey from a small German village to full participation in American civic life. His story offers a glimpse into the immigrant experience at the turn of the 20th century and lays a historical foundation for the Trump family in the United States.
Friedrich Trump was born in 1869 in Kallstadt, a village in the Palatinate region of what was then the Kingdom of Bavaria. His family belonged to the Lutheran Church, like most in the area. His father, Christian Johannes Trump, died in 1877, leaving Friedrich fatherless at just eight years old. His mother, Katharina Kober, raised the family in modest circumstances.
Crossing the Atlantic
At age 16, in 1885, Friedrich left Germany for America. He departed from the port city of Bremen aboard the steamship Eider on October 7 and arrived twelve days later, on October 19, at the Castle Garden Immigrant Landing Depot in New York City. Immigration records list him on line 133 of the passenger manifest as “Friedr. Trumpf,” a 16-year-old from Kallstadt.
Castle Garden served as the primary point of entry for immigrants before Ellis Island opened in 1892. Like many others, Friedrich likely faced medical inspections, questioning, and the uncertainty of whether he would be allowed to enter the country. By 1896, he had been in the United States for over a decade and was preparing to travel abroad. That year, he filed for a U.S. passport. This application signals several key facts: he had naturalized as a U.S. citizen, he intended to return to the United States after travel, and he had established a life stable enough to allow international movement. While the exact reason for the trip isn’t specified in the records, passport applications at that time often indicated business or family visits abroad.
Old Roots and New Names
Friedrich’s ancestry stretches back to at least the 17th century in the same German region. The earliest known male ancestor in his line was Johann Philipp Drumpft or Trump, who lived from 1667 to 1707. Beyond that, the family’s roots grow obscure, with no record of Johann Philipp’s parents or birthplace. The Trump family name underwent minor variations, including “Drumpft,” before settling on “Trump,” a change that reflected common practices as immigrants adapted to American systems.
The Family Legacy
More than a century after Friedrich Trump arrived in New York, his grandson Donald J. Trump would become both the 45th and 47th President of the United States. The path from a teenage immigrant traveling alone to the presidency of the country he chose reflects a deep generational shift shaped by migration, adaptation, and ambition.
