He departed from the port city of Bremen aboard the steamship Eider on October 7 and arrived twelve days later, on October 19, at the Castle Garden Immigrant Landing Depot in New York City. Immigration records list him on line 133 of the passenger manifest as “Friedr. Trumpf,” a 16-year-old from Kallstadt.
Castle Garden served as the primary point of entry for immigrants before Ellis Island opened in 1892. Like many others, Friedrich likely faced medical inspections, questioning, and the uncertainty of whether he would be allowed to enter the country. The Trump family name underwent minor variations, including “Drumpft,” before settling on “Trump,” a change that reflected common practices as immigrants adapted to American systems.

More than a century after Friedrich Trump arrived in New York, his grandson Donald J. Trump would become both the 45th and 47th President of the United States.
