Ernst Munzinger Passport | 20 July Plot Conspirator

Who Was Ernst Munzinger?

Ernst Munzinger was a German lieutenant colonel in army intelligence, born in Riga, Livonia, then part of the Russian Empire. He is documented by the German Resistance Memorial Center (Gedenkstätte Deutscher Widerstand) as one of the resistance fighters imprisoned and killed in the final days of World War II.

Son of a brewer, Munzinger had ambitions as a journalist but emigrated from Zweibrücken to Riga on his father’s wishes. He began reading law at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, became a member of the Corps Isaria in 1910, then broke off his studies to enlist in the Bavarian Army. He served with the Royal Bavarian Infantry Regiment “Prince William of Hohenzollern,” No. 22 in Zweibrücken. On the Western Front and then as an intelligence officer on the Eastern Front, he rose to the rank of captain and was awarded two Iron Crosses.

From Riga to Berlin: A Political Turning Point

This passport was issued by the German Embassy in Riga in 1921, the year Munzinger returned to Latvia after the war with his father. He married Senta Blenck there in 1920 and built a chemical factory after completing commercial training. He also became a committed supporter of the growing National Socialist movement, leading the NSDAP/AO chapter in Latvia.

After the Nazi takeover in Germany, the Latvian government expelled him in 1933 for his open National Socialist sympathies, and Munzinger moved to Berlin with his family. He and his brother-in-law ran a clothing and textiles business there. It was the November 1938 Kristallnacht pogrom that broke his allegiance to the movement entirely. The organized violence against Jewish communities ended his support for National Socialism.

Inside the Abwehr: Contact with the Resistance Circle

When the Second World War began, Munzinger was drafted into counterintelligence under Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, the head of the Abwehr, Germany’s military intelligence service. Within that structure, he came into contact with the resistance network built around General Hans Oster and Hans von Dohnanyi, two of the central architects of internal military opposition to Hitler. The Abwehr’s connection to passport history runs deeper than Munzingers case alone: the site’s article on Walter Schulze-Bernett, a Canaris Abwehr officer who saved 176 Dutch and German Jews, demonstrates how travel documents from this network carried extraordinary human stakes.

Munzinger was promoted to lieutenant colonel in spring 1944 and then returned to civilian life. He was informed of the planned assassination attempt set for 20 July 1944, but his precise operational role in those preparations remains unknown.

Arrest, Imprisonment, and Execution

The 20 July 1944 assassination attempt failed. Claus von Stauffenberg’s bomb at Hitler’s Wolf’s Lair wounded but did not kill Hitler, triggering a wave of arrests across the resistance network. Munzinger was arrested by the SS in Salzburg and transferred to the Lehrterstrasse prison in Berlin, the Gestapo’s dedicated detention facility for 20 July conspirators and resistance members.

He remained imprisoned throughout the Battle of Berlin. On the night of 22-23 April 1945, just hours before his scheduled release as Soviet forces closed in, a special detachment from the Reich Security Main Office (Reichssicherheitshauptamt) executed him alongside 14 fellow resistance fighters on factory grounds near Invalidenstrasse. He was 57 years old.

His body was initially buried in a mass grave in Alt-Moabit and later transferred to St. Paul’s Cemetery in Berlin-Plötzensee. I visited Plötzensee and the cemetery in 2023 but was unable to locate the grave; the administration was closed on my final day in Berlin.

The full account of the Lehrterstrasse prison and the April 1945 killings is documented in the scholarly study by Johannes Tuchel, director of the German Resistance Memorial Center: “…und ihrer aller wartete der Strick”: Das Zellengefängnis Lehrter Straße 3 nach dem 20. Juli 1944 (Lukas Verlag, 2014, 506 pages). It is the definitive primary-source account of the prison and its prisoners.

I was in contact with the director of the German Resistance Memorial Center, as the institution expressed interest in housing this document. Unfortunately, the bureaucratic demands of a public organization made a conclusion impossible. I say unfortunately, but perhaps luckily for my collection.

The Passport as Historical Artifact

This German passport, issued by the embassy in Riga in 1921, predates Munzinger’s political radicalization, his expulsion from Latvia, his service in the Abwehr, and his execution. It is a document that carries within it the entire arc of a life that began with the aspirations of a brewer’s son and ended in a Berlin back-lot killing, hours before liberation.

For collectors working in the German historical space, the Third Reich diplomatic passport series and the Third Reich passport sample folder provide essential comparative context. For scope, the discovery of one of the last German Third Reich passports illustrates just how rare surviving documents from this period have become.

Documents like Munzinger’s 1921 German passport are not simply collectible paper. They are primary sources that anchor individuals to moments, places, and choices that shaped history.
