Major General Heinz Hellmich
Major General Heinz Hellmich (9 June 1890 – 17 June 1944) was a German officer who served in both World Wars and held significant commands during World War II.
Early Life and World War I Service
Born in Karlsruhe, Germany, Hellmich began his military career in 1908 as a Fahnenjunker in the 4th Lothringisches Infantry Regiment No. 136. He was commissioned as a Leutnant in 1910. During World War I, he served on the Western Front and was severely wounded in 1914. After recovering, he was captured by Russian forces in 1915 but managed to escape and return to Germany. Post-war, he continued his service in the Reichswehr, holding various positions, including company commander and staff roles.
Interwar Period and World War II
Hellmich’s interwar service included assignments at the Reichswehr Ministry and the War Academy. Promoted to Oberstleutnant in 1934 and Oberst in 1936, he held various staff positions. With the outbreak of World War II, he served as a supply officer in the 7th Army and later in Army Group B. From June 1940 to January 1942, he commanded the 23rd Infantry Division, participating in campaigns in France and the Soviet Union.
In April 1942, Hellmich was appointed commander of the 141st Reserve Division. He later served as the Inspector of Eastern Troops (General der Osttruppen) from December 1942 to December 1943. In January 1944, he took command of the 243rd Infantry Division, stationed in the Cotentin Peninsula, France.

Death and Posthumous Recognition
Hellmich was killed on 17 June 1944 during an Allied air attack near Cherbourg, France, while defending the area during the Normandy invasion. He was posthumously awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross on 2 September 1944 for his leadership and valor.
