Modern Passport History: FRY Ambassador Passport
A diplomatic travel document which is rare to spot. Modern Passport History FRY
The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) was established in 1992, comprising Serbia and Montenegro, after the breakup of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The FRY was a significant player in the complex political landscape of the Balkans during the 1990s. Throughout its existence, the country faced international isolation, economic sanctions, and internal challenges, particularly during the Yugoslav Wars. Modern Passport History FRY
Despite these difficulties, FRY maintained diplomatic relations and issued passports to its citizens and diplomats. The FRY passport, especially the ambassador’s passport, symbolized the continuity of the Yugoslav state, albeit in a reduced form. These passports were often subject to scrutiny due to the political turmoil in the region and were sometimes restricted for travel in certain countries.
The FRY existed until 2003, when it was restructured and renamed the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. This marked the end of the FRY as a distinct political entity, leading to the eventual independence of Montenegro in 2006. The history of FRY passports, particularly those issued to diplomats, provides insight into the geopolitical challenges of the time and the nation’s efforts to maintain its international presence despite significant adversity. He joined the diplomatic service in 1963 and served abroad in the Yugoslav embassy in Buenos Aires and in Mexico from 1985 to 1989. Non-resident in Honduras and Guatemala, later ambassador of the FRY in Venezuela, who spent a large part of his career in Spanish-speaking countries due to his good knowledge of the Spanish language
The diplomatic passport was issued in 2005 and valid until 2010, hence an artifact of modern passport history for a short-lived state. When the document was issued, Sukovic was retired. He passed in 2007. Modern Passport History FRY
