Theodor Körner (1791-1813) was a German poet, dramatist, and soldier, whose short life and literary works became a symbol of resistance during the Napoleonic Wars. Born in Dresden to a cultured family, his father was a well-known jurist and his mother, a close friend of Friedrich Schiller, was an accomplished writer. Körner’s work initially focused on drama, and by his early twenties, he had already achieved success as a playwright. His play “Zriny,” written in 1812, was especially well-received and showcased his emerging talent. However, it was the turbulence of the Napoleonic era that profoundly shaped Körner’s life and legacy. In 1813, inspired by the spirit of German nationalism and resistance against French occupation, he joined the Lützow Free Corps, a volunteer unit fighting against Napoleon’s forces.

While serving as a soldier, Körner continued to write, producing some of his most famous patriotic poems, which later became known as “Lyre and Sword.” These poems, filled with fervor and devotion to the cause of German freedom, resonated deeply with the public and solidified his status as a national hero. Körner’s life was tragically cut short in August 1813 when he was killed in action near Gadebusch, just 22 years old.
