Wanderbuch 1850

A very rare Wanderbuch passport, issued in 1850 by the Principality of Hohenzollern-Hechingen

This is not a loose sheet but a true booklet. Compact, practical, and clearly meant to be carried. The format is 18 × 11 cm, complete with its original slipcase, which is already exceptional on its own. The book contains 64 pages, with official entries recorded up to page 12. Documented travels continue through 1852, showing that it was genuinely used over time, not just issued and forgotten.

The Wanderbuch (Journeyman’s Book) itself was printed in 1847 by the court printing office, which places its production slightly before the recorded journeys. That detail matters. It reflects the administrative practice of preparing standardized travel books in advance, ready to be issued when needed.

Even more compelling is what survives alongside it. Included are one photographic postcard, one photograph, and a loose note with an address. These accompanying items add a human layer to the document. They tie the official record to a real person moving through space and time, leaving traces beyond ink and stamps.

Wanderbücher from the mid-19th century are scarce to begin with. Examples from Hohenzollern-Hechingen are especially hard to find, given the small size and short independent existence of the principality. A complete booklet, with slipcase, documented travel, and personal enclosures, moves this well beyond the ordinary.

In short, this is a highly uncommon survival. A working travel document. Intimate in scale. Rich in context. And a strong witness to regulated mobility in the German lands just before the modern nation-state took shape.
