Under Trump, political appointees were often sent to high-profile locations such as Western Europe and the Caribbean, where they made up over 70 percent of appointments. More complex or sensitive regions typically remained in the hands of professionals.

This change raises questions. Should diplomacy prioritize experience, or alignment with the president’s goals? Can political appointees represent national interests effectively without formal training? What are the long-term risks of sidelining professionals?
