The Passport

A temporary travel document issued to German nationals in lieu of a passport was commonly known as the “Reiseausweis als Passersatz”, or “Travel Document in Lieu of Passport.” This document was often used when a German citizen either did not have a passport or their passport was lost, stolen, or otherwise unavailable. The Reiseausweis als Passersatz served as a temporary substitute to allow the holder to travel internationally and was typically issued for limited, specific purposes and valid for a short period.

After World War II, similar documents were also used to help displaced Germans and refugees travel and return to Germany. In certain cases, for example, during the division of East and West Germany, similar temporary documents were issued to assist in travel across borders under specific conditions, especially if there were restrictions on regular passport issuance.a

His occupation is given as “Film producer” in this passport from 1950 with travel to France.
