Berlin Wall – GDR Passport History – Reunification
On August 13, 1961, the Berlin Wall was built – 62 years ago. A significant event for Germany and the Western world.
Today, Germany will be already unified for 33 years on this 3 October 2023.
The Berlin Wall (Berliner Mauer) Berlin Wall Reunification
The Berlin Wall, built by East Germany from 1961 to 1989, separated West Berlin until its opening in November 1989. Its demolition officially began on 13 June 1990 and was completed in 1992. Guard towers lined concrete walls around the “death strip,” featuring anti-vehicle trenches and various defenses. Berlin Wall Reunification
The Eastern Bloc said the wall protected against fascist threats, ensuring the “will of the people” in building East Germany’s socialist state.
In practice, the Wall functioned to impede the widespread emigration and defection prevalent in East Germany and the communist Eastern Bloc after World War II.. Berlin Wall Reunification
The Berlin Wall, known officially as the “Anti-Fascist Protection Rampart,” suggested GDR’s view that NATO nations, especially West Germany, were considered “fascists” by the authorities.
The West Berlin city government sometimes referred to it as the “Wall of Shame”—a term coined by mayor Willy Brandt—while condemning the Wall’s restriction on freedom of movement.
Along with the separate and much longer Inner German border (IGB), which demarcated the border between East and West Germany, it came to symbolize the “Iron Curtain” that separated Western Europe and the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War. Berlin Wall Reunification
Over 3 Million Defectors
Before the Wall’s erection, 3.5 million East Germans circumvented Eastern Bloc emigration restrictions and defected from the GDR, many by crossing over the border from East Berlin into West Berlin, from where they could then travel to West Germany and other Western European countries.
Between 1961 and 1989, the wall prevented almost all such emigration. During this period, around 5,000 people attempted to escape over the wall, with an estimated death toll of from 136 to more than 200 in and around Berlin.
Travel Liberalization Berlin Wall Reunification
In 1989, the Eastern Bloc underwent political changes, leading to liberalization and power shifts in pro-Soviet governments like Poland and Hungary. East Germans crossed into West Germany after the GDR government allowed it on 9 November 1989, celebrating together on the Berlin Wall.
Enthusiastic crowds and collectors dismantled the wall in weeks. Governments later used machinery to clear the rest. Demolition began in 1990 and concluded in 1992, marking German reunification on October 3, 1990.
A Passport Issued Close To The Event
Issued on May 31, 1961, to Josef Brueck, this passport notes his trip to CSSR by car, including the plate number. Departing East Germany on July 14, 1961, at Zinnwald border checkpoint, he returned on August 28, 1961, to a now-walled country.
This passport is the closest document in my collection to this event. Not many passports were issued in the following years, from August 1961 to 1963. Berlin Wall Reunification
GDR Passport History
The East German passports are for me, as a German, very interesting. I possess the most extensive and thorough collection of GDR passports, covering the complete history of passport evolution. Starting from June 1955. A Seaman’s book from April 1952 is closest to the GDR’s founding. Only in 1955 did authorities permit ordinary citizens to travel.
Passports expired by December 31, 1995. Possessing them with foreign stamps post-reunification is a valuable collection.
Foreign Travel After Reunification With A GDR Passport
Just picture the scenario: It’s late 1995, and you’re presenting your GDR passport to a border control officer. It’s a moment worth capturing, yet strangely, I’ve never come across a photograph of such an encounter.
I’m fortunate to own passports with stamps from Malta, Tunisia, Turkey, and the USA post-reunification in October 1990. My GDR collection includes about 200 passports.
