Über den Autor

Tom Topol ist Passporthistoriker und Autor. Seine Arbeit wurde unter anderem von CNN, BBC und Newsweek zitiert. Das U.S. Department of State hat ihn für seine Forschung ausgezeichnet. Das vorliegende Buch zur DDR Reisepass Geschichte ist Teil einer Reihe von Fachpublikationen; sein Werk “Let Pass or Die” dokumentiert 400 Jahre globale Passgeschichte.

This book started with a simple question: what happens to the passports nobody writes about? Fifty of them, curated straight from my own collection and from archives, spanning roughly 400 years, from a 1610 pass under King James I to a 1982 Kiribati passport. I found a passport wallet belonging to Mrs. Elise Böhler, an Andorran passport from 1942 with a hand colorized photo, and the passport receipt Australia issued in 1957, alongside the paiza of Genghis Khan, a metal tablet that predates the passport itself but carried the same brutal authority: let pass, or die. Before photographs existed, a passport page could carry sixteen separate written characteristics just to describe its bearer’s face. I wanted to show what gets lost when a document becomes standardized: the handwriting, the wax seals, the small human details pressed into paper.
