Collector’s meeting in Basel

Collector’s meeting in Basel
Edi and I we know each other for more than ten years and it was a great pleasure to meet each other again in Basel during my Europe trip. We spent three days together and I was invited to Edi’s family home for a full board every day. I was delighted to meet his whole family during these days. We had so much fun together. Edi’s father Paul (84) was a former customs/police officer and told the nice story how he met his wife at the German/Swiss border. She just bumped into him with her bicycle and said she likes him. Paul showed me a picture of this young girl when the “accident” happened in the early 1950s. I instantly understood Paul that he married that girl.

The passport collection from Edi is special as I have never seen before some many Swiss Canton passport booklets. Those were only issued until 1915 and are very rare to find nowadays. Especially, those of smaller Cantons. Back then a passport was not much in use, even less in such smaller Cantons. Edi also added some Journeyman books to his collection, those served as a passport too. Then there are some curiosities like the passport photo of a man in full sky racing dress. Fantastic! Take a look at the gallery to get an impression.

During my visit, I also meet-up with Naomi Lubrich, the director of the Jewish Museum of Switzerland in Basel. They had a fantastic exhibition two years ago about false passports issued by the Lados group. I couldn’t see the exhibition myself, but I got the excellent exhibition book. With Naomi we talked about the success of the exhibition. The documents are now all back into a Swiss archive. But the Jewish museum still displays some passport examples with the infamous J-stamp.
