NKVD
The People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs, abbreviated NKVD, was the interior ministry of the Soviet Union. Established in 1917, the NKVD initially handled regular police duties, supervised prisons, and managed labor camps. It disbanded in 1930, redistributing its functions among other agencies. Nonetheless, it reinstated as an all-union ministry in 1934.
OGPU
The NKVD absorbed the functions of the OGPU, the secret police organization, in 1934. Through this consolidation, the NKVD acquired a monopoly on law enforcement, maintaining dominance until the end of World War II. Simultaneously, it engaged in both regular public order tasks and covert secret police operations. The NKVD is known for its role in political repression and for carrying out the Great Purge under Joseph Stalin. It was led by Genrikh Yagoda, Nikolai Yezhov and Lavrentiy Beria.
Mass Executions
The NKVD conducted mass extrajudicial executions and managed the Gulag labor camps. They repressed Kulaks, deported entire nationalities, protected borders, and enforced Soviet policies globally, including political assassinations. Significantly, they actively participated in repressing and massacring in Poland.
In March 1946, the government renamed all People’s Commissariats to Ministries, rebranding the NKVD as the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD).USSR Passport Ukraine Palestine
